FAQ
What is BSA used for?
BSA is used clinically for chemotherapy dosing (more accurate than weight alone), cardiac index calculation, and as a measure of metabolic mass. It normalizes physiological measurements across individuals of different sizes.
Which formula should I use?
Mosteller is most commonly used in clinical practice due to its simplicity. Du Bois is the classic formula from 1916. Haycock is validated for infants, children, and adults.
Is BSA the same as BMI?
No. BMI (Body Mass Index) is weight/height² and assesses weight relative to height. BSA estimates the total outer surface area of the body in m² and is used for different clinical purposes.
